For weeks leading up to Manny's visit several short video promos aired at Altoona (PA) Area High School. In their English classes, meanwhile, students read excerpts from The Freedom Writer's Diary while both students and teachers wrote their own diary entries.
Manny arrived on April 3 to a school well-prepared for his visit—as prepared as they could, Meghan Bradley said, for the emotional impact of what was about to take place. During his eight hours at AAHS, Manny led two student assemblies, was interviewed by both students and members of the media, conducted a workshop with English teachers, and hosted an Inkwell workshop with students.
An article on Manny's visit made the front page of the local newspaper and a week or more later an editorial was published in the same paper about the assemblies and while honored to received the coverage, the articles published in the school newspaper really spoke to our hearts.

A big thanks to Meghan Bradley and Breanne Venios, AAHS teachers who were instrumental in bringing Manny to AAHS, who also compiled a summary to their grant providers that included the following testimonials and feedback.
The Turn the Page Project
Inspired Our Students
"I actually planned on not coming today, but I'm so happy that I did. I found out some things about people that I know that I would have never thought. I now know that I can help them if they want it. My next goal is to figure out how. You inspired so many people today like myself. I am truly grateful for you showing up." - Student
"[My daughter] was very inspired by Manny Scott and his story. She has been sharing about how much the diary writings, assembly, and activities have changed her perspective." - Parent
"[My child] has shared so much about the event and continues to talk about it … even this morning!" - Parent
Manny Scott's impact was immediate, emotional, and powerful. Students appreciated him and took his message to heart because, as they said, "he was real."
Strengthened Our Teachers
"This year has been difficult for me, but April 3rd will truly be a day I'll never forget. He reminded me why I always wanted to do this job." - Teacher
"I can't and won't give up because the kids needs me." - Teacher
Teachers gained valuable perspective about our school population when students and teachers courageously stood up during the Turn the Page assembly. English teachers plan to make journal writing a regular part of their classes.
Changed Our School
"You have changed our school with just that one hour." - Student
"The effect his presence has had is indescribable." - Teacher
"It changed [my son.]" - Parent
"As a teacher there are things that I hope to do next year to better know my students so I can serve them later." - Teacher
Teachers, counselors, and principals selected 115 students to form an Inkwell—a group of student leaders that will work to implement positives changes at AAHS.
Saved Students' Lives
"You made me realize that I'm not alone in my situation. I know that with your help today I won't give up." - Student
"I've failed suicide 3 times. I was going to kill myself this weekend. You saved me from doing that. It amazes me that someone like you would take time to speak to a teenager. That you for that." - Student
Ninety-six students met with Manny Scott during the school day, and he took an additional hour and a half to meet with students after school.
