This week, I am only eating plain oatmeal, rice, beans, and a piece of chicken the size of one chicken nugget; and I'm only drinking tap water. I've decided to eat as half of the world's population eats- on less than two dollars a day. I'm doing this to stand in solidarity with people around the world who are fighting hunger and thirst every day.
As some of you know, I have been homeless, and have even eaten food out of dumpsters, and I'll never forget the pangs of hunger I felt as I slept on cold, concrete floors of homeless shelters with no blanket, pillow, or mattress. I'll never forget the look in my mother's eyes during that time, when she did everything in her power to find us food and shelter, when she would tell us, "everything is going to be okay."
That was a long time ago, but I have not forgotten. I have not forgotten that there are millions of others who do not have the luxury of eating three healthy meals a day. I have not forgotten about those who are dying hourly simply because they do not have access to clean water. I have not forgotten the faces of those men, women, and children I met around the world who hadn't eaten in days. I have not forgotten about my homeless friends who were homeless not because they were lazy, but because they lost their jobs, they got sick and couldn't afford to pay their medical bills, or because of some other tragedy.
This week, every time I feel a pang of hunger or fill a cup with tap water, I will be praying for those who live with hunger and thirst every day. I am standing with those who are hurting, and I am hoping for that day when no child of God will die of hunger or thirst; when no one who is bruised and wounded will be brushed aside; when no one will be considered small and insignificant- when men and women everywhere will do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly; when we can really love our neighbors as we love ourselves.
In addition, I'm also joining with others to pack and send 2.5 million packets of seeds to those in need. If you want to join me, or you want to learn more, CLICK HERE.
The late Michael Jackson said so well, "We are the world, we are children; We are the ones to make a brighter day so lets start giving." Thanks for reading, and for standing to make this world a better place. God Bless!
